News On The African American Art Scene

New York City, New York, Critically acclaimed African American sculptor, Martin Puryear is showing a MoMA. Mr. Puryear, widely seen as the most innovative sculptor in the world today, was born in 1941 in Washington, DC.

The count is in, Martin Puyear wins by knock out in the 21st century bout of super sculptors. He defies all categories. He is a craftman and an artist  in an art world that loves art  with no meaning, if  in  fact,  one has  any meaning at  all in today's "art world,"  where meaning  is suspect.

Eugene Martin's (d. 2005) work will be  in a double exhibition with Jerry Harris, Jan. 14-Feb. 29, 2008 at the Chico City Hall Gallery, Chico, California. It is a pleasure to present this brilliant artist to a Northern California audience. His wife, Dr. Suzanne Fredericq is tirelessly bringing his work to a wider American, and world art public.

Quilts From The Women Of Gee's Bend, Alabama.

"The compostiton of these quilts contrast dramatically with the ordered regularity associated with many styles of Euro-American qulitmaking. There's a brillant, improvational range of approaches to composition that is more often associated with inventivness and power of leading 20th century abstract painters than it is with textile making," says Alvia Wardraw, curator of modern and contemporary art  at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX.

The black women of Gee's Bend add a new chapter in the evolving revolution in African American art.
