News On The African American Art Scene
This blog is about various happenings in the African American Art World.
Eugene Martin
Eugene Martin's (d. 2005) work was shown in a double exhibition with Jerry Harris, Jan. 14-Feb. 29, 2008 at the Chico City Hall Gallery, Chico, California. It was a pleasure to present this brilliant artist to a Northern California audience. His wife, Dr. Suzanne Fredericq is tirelessly bringing his work to a wider American, and world art public.

The Opening of The New Wing of The Art Institute of Chicago and Richard Hunt
I was invited to the opening of The New Wing of The Art institute of Chicago on May 15th, 2008, a 390 million dollar addition to this august institution, designed by the architect Piano. It is airy, light, and art space friendly. The international art world was in attendance, but for me, it was the presence of the great African American sculptor Richard Hunt (b. 1935, Chicago, IL).
Mr. Hunt's artistic output is legendary. He will receive this year's life time achievement award from the International Sculptor Center. I was delighted to spend the day at his imposing studio in Lincoln Park, Chicago.(see my film on him on youtube.com/user/sirepurdue.) He was very kind and gracious. I tip my hat to him.

Quilts From The Women Of Gee's Bend, Alabama.

Mary L. Bennett (b. 1942)
"The compostiton of these quilts contrast dramatically with the ordered regularity associated with many styles of Euro-American quilt making. There's a brilliant, improvisational range of approaches to composition that is more often associated with inventiveness and power of leading 20th century abstract painters than it is with textile making," says Alvia Wardraw, curator of modern and contemporary art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX.
The black women of Gee's Bend add a new chapter in the evolving revolution in African American art.
